Police in Lodi say that a kid walked up behind a SWAT officer and pulled the trigger of his holstered gun during a demonstration at Lodi Public Library.

The incident happened back on August 24 and resulted in a minor injury to the officer, according to a release from the Lodi Police Department. The officer was giving a demonstration of his tactical equipment when the 6 to 8 year old walked up behind him.

“There’s really nothing that could have been done differently,” Detective Erika Urrea with Lodi Police told FOX40 on Saturday.

After the gun fired, the child ran. Police do not know the child’s identity.

No one else was hurt in the incident.

Police note that, due to a gun being fired, an investigation is ongoing. A new holster design could possibly be a result of the investigation.

“As peace officers, we have a responsibility to the public to ensure our weapons and equipment are properly safeguarded. We’re fortunate this event didn’t result in a tragedy,” Police Chief Mark Helms wrote in a statement released Sunday.
