A propaganda movie by China’s military, the People’s Liberation Army, has denounced the United States for trying to overthrow the ruling Communist Party, and declares that China had replaced the Soviet Union as Washington’s chief enemy after the end of the Cold War.
Competition Without Sound was recently unspooled by the PLA — the world’s largest standing army with two million troops — and it claims the U.S. is trying to overthrow China in five specific ways, the Hong Kong-based Ming Pao newspaper reported.
An hour and a half long, the movie was made for internal distribution but found its way online.
The film claims the U.S was using political infiltration and the export of culture to manipulate young minds, and undermine support for the Communist Party.
It also says the U.S. was attempting to recruit agents in China, and was engaged in “social infiltration.” It warns that America used similar tactics to undermine the Soviet Union back in 1991.

The propaganda film also attacked political dissidents such as Mao Yushi and He Weifang as agents of the West, and said jailed Nobel Peace Prize winner, Liu Xiaobo, had been cultivated by the U.S.
One of the video’s producers is an outspoken PLA general, Liu Yazhou, political commissar of the People’s Liberation Army National Defense University.
“The American elites … confidently believe that the best way to disorganize China is to work closely with it, allowing it to gradually become part of the US-led international and political system,” said Liu.
While Liu’s views are not seen as representing the mainstream opinions within the Chinese leadership, they do reflect a point of view on the left wing of the administration.
The National Defense University, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the army’s General Staff Department collaborated on the movie.
