Trent Reznor‘s rebooted Nine Inch Nails is in need of a new bassist: Eric Avery, who was announced to be joining the reformed industrial rockers on their 2013-14 world tour earlier this year, has pulled out of the project.
“It’s with very mixed emotions I tell you all that I’m pulling out of NIN,” Avery wrote on a Facebook post on Wednesday afternoon, May 15. “I know. It’s been a tough call and I don’t know if it’s the right one. But I really want to focus on my musical life here in L.A., on film work in particular. As the tour dates kept growing… I just got overwhelmed. I just got home from a year of heavy travel with Garbage, the idea of leaving town for another year and a half, and with all the intensity that nails demands… fortunately my friend Trent understands all this and appreciated my pulling the plug now instead of deep into 2013 and 14. Go get ’em gentlemen.”
Avery was part of Jane’s Addiction’s original lineup and rejoined the band in 2008. Last year, he helped Garbage support their fifth album, Not Your Kind of People, on the road.
Reznor announced the return of Nine Inch Nails in February, unveiling a live lineup that included Avery, King Crimson’s Adrian Belew, Telefon Tel Aviv’s Josh Eustis, Alessandro Cortini and Ilan Rubin. NIN is scheduled to performed on July 26 in Naeba, Japan, before making its U.S. return at Lollapalooza in August.
