BERLIN- Hungary’s TV2 has become the latest broadcaster to pick up red-hot Israeli singing competition format Rising Star, taking the rights for a local language adaptation from distributor Keshet International.
The deal, announced Friday (Nov. 22) will see TV2 produce a first 14-episode season of the show, in which viewers vote live via a mobile app for their favorite singers, with broadcast planned for the Fall of 2014.
Rising Star has been arguably the world’s hottest new reality format since it debuted in Israel in September, pulling a 46 percent audience share on Channel 2. Keshet has sold the show to ABC in the U.S., RTL in Germany, France’s M6, Rossiya 1 in Russia, Sony”s shingle Toro in Italy and Nordisk for Scandinavia. ITV in the U.K. is believed to be circling the format as well.
Broadcasters hope the live voting feature will revive interest in the music talent show genre similar to the effect the blind auditions and spinning chairs had for The Voice. But Rising Star is entering a competitive market. Established talent shows – including Idol, X Factor, The Voice and Got Talent – are on air in nearly every major territory worldwide.
