Carl Reiner will be honored with the Humanitarian Torch of Learning Award at the American Friends of The Hebrew University’s (AFHU) Bel Air Affaire in Los Angeles on Sept. 21. Philanthropists Ruth Flinkman-Marandy and Ben Marandy will also be honored, it was announced on Wednesday.
The event, which will feature cabaret theater musicians Joe Iconis & Family, will be hosted by Brindell Gottlieb for the sixth consecutive year at “The Milton” estate. An active supporter of the university, Gottlieb also funds faculty recruitment for the university’s Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences. Moreover, she recently endowed a lectureship in honor of former Ambassador and the university’s recently retired vp for external relations, Carmi Gillon.
Proceeds will benefit scholarships for BA, MA and PhD students at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. (Fun fact: Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud are among the school’s founders.)
The award goes to professionals who have achieved the highest levels of success and are equally dedicated to philanthropy and leadership as their career. As an actor, director, producer and comedian, Reiner (also father to Rob Reiner) has undoubtedly achieved his success in the entertainment industry. He is a nine-time Emmy winner, best known as the co-star of Your Show of Shows and creator and co-star of The Dick Van Dyke Show.
Reiner’s counterparts, Flinkman-Marandy and Marandy, are highly active in supporting the university, participating in a series of philanthropies, and holding a number of positions, that have benefited the school and Israel. Flinkman-Marandy, for instance, has supported the university for more than 50 years, and currently serves on the Los Angeles Region and national boards, among many other contributions.
Joyce Brandman, president of AFHU’s Los Angeles Region, said of the recipients: “Ruth Flinkman-Marandy and Ben Marandy have been devoted to the Los Angeles Region and are active participants and leaders in our mission. Their support and friendship is indispensable. We’re also honored to host Carl Reiner, whose career and support has been inspiring for the community.”
