California lawmakers voted Thursday to name the new western span of the Bay Bridge after Willie Brown.

Officially, the span will be known as the Willie L. Brown, Jr. Bridge. The resolution was passed by the California Senate on a 26-7 vote. It does not need the governor’s signature.

Brown was a longtime assembly member, representing San Francisco for 30 years. He was also mayor of San Francisco from 1996 to 2004.

The new western span opened Sept. 3.
