BERLIN – The Netherlands has picked Alex van Warmerdam‘s dark psychological thriller Borgman as its entry for next year’s best foreign language film Oscar.
Borgman premiered in competition in Cannes and has proved a strong seller for Fortissimo Films, which has inked dozens of deals, including one with Drafthouse Films for North America.
The film stars Jan Bijvoet as the titular Borgman, a vagrant living in the woods who manages to get invited into the home of a well-to-do, if somewhat arrogant, Dutch family. He proceeds to turn their lives upside down, gradually taking control of the entire family to use for his twisted ends.
The best foreign film nominations for the 2014 Academy Awards will be announced on Jan. 16. The 86th Oscar Ceremony will take place March 2, 2014.?
