Lionsgate TV is looking to internationally acclaimed author Anders de la Motte to fuel its next scripted series.
Following a competitive situation, the studio has teamed with Steve McPherson to bring de la Motte’s forthcoming thriller MemoRandom to the small screen, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
MemoRandom is de la Motte’s follow-up to The Game trilogy. Consisting of Geim, Buzz and Bubble, the first book in the series won the Swedish Academy of Crime Writers’ First Book Award in 2010. The three-book series, which will be published stateside this week by Emily Bestler Books/Simon & Schuster, has already been published in 27 languages.
STORY: Stephen McPherson Partners With Lionsgate and Fox in TV Return
De la Motte is a former police officer and director of security at one of the world’s largest IT companies and currently serves as a consultant on international security. He’s considered one of the hottest new voices in Scandinavian crime fiction, whose work has been described as wild, playful and full of references to pop culture.
MemoRandom, which will be released in spring 2014 in Sweden, is described as a noir story revolving around a policeman responsible for recruiting and handling secret informants. After suffering a stroke, he forgets everything that happened in the past year, including a special informant code-named Janus that everyone is interested in finding. A stateside release date has not yet been announced.
McPherson, de la Motte and Niclas Salomonsson — the author’s literary agent — will executive produce the project. The author is repped by Salomonsson Agency and RWSG, which brokered the deal. McPherson and Lionsgate landed the property following a multiple-studio auction, which has become commonplace for Salomonsson/RWSG books. Their sales have included Leif G.W. Persson‘s Backstrom (which Fox developed); I Am Victor (NBC), The Son (Warner Bros.), Mona (New Regency) and The Snowman (Working Title), among others, all of which Salomonsson produces.
For McPherson, the project marks the former ABC Entertainment topper’s latest sale this development season. The producer also set up Ball & Chain, a drama from Lionsgate at Fox; Amanda Knox-type drama Guilt, also at Fox via Lionsgate; comedy Sister Whipped at CBS via Universal Television; an untitled comedy from Kate Gersten set up at Fox through Lionsgate; and a handful of other projects, including a Fox comedy pilot with The Big Bang Theory‘s Johnny Galecki producing.
McPherson inked a two-year, first-look development deal with Lionsgate and Fox in April.
