Just ahead of the theatrical release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Sesame Street‘s latest upload spoofs the Lord of the Rings franchise. Cookie Monster plays the role of the Frodo Baggins-like lead, Monster Gobble, who is on a quest to bake cookies — or, as he calls them, “Me precious!”

The five-minute video opens with the legacy of cookies, with Gobble reading a recipe just before the map flies away. With puppets standing in for Gandalf and Arwen (played by Liv Tyler on the big screen), Gobble must practice self-control and delayed gratification in order to assemble all the ingredients correctly and bake a batch of cookies in the fires of Mount Crumb: “It’s the oven over there,” says the Arwen stand-in.
Gobble also must use basic mathematics and rhyming strategies to help remember important things (“How many chippies should you pour? Grab one cup and add one more.”) but occasionally gets distracted when a Gollum-like twin tries to convince Gobble to simply eat the ingredients raw to pacify his cravings.
The short is packed with fun nods to the Lord of the Rings films — Gandalf theatrically tells Gobble “You shall not pass!” because the recipe isn’t complete — as well as the same witty humor that pokes fun at the parody itself. Gobble’s best lines are “Wow, that good special effect!” and “Boy, you dramatic!”
“Lord of the Crumbs” is the latest addition to the show’s “Cookie Crumby Pictures” online library of spoofs, alongside parodies of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, True Blood, Homeland, The Voice and Icona Pop’s “I Love It.” The most popular spoof is a cookie-centric take on Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” with more than 15 million views.
