The cover to Del Rey’s first Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens novel has been revealed, along with some plot details. Aftermath may take place following the events of Return of the Jedi, but as the cover tagline suggests, “The War Is Not Over.”
As a post on StarWars.com reveals, Aftermath is the first book in a trilogy designed to span the timeframe between 1983’s Jedi and this year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, introducing “a sweeping new cast of characters” that might include some important players in J.J. Abrams‘ relaunch of the space opera franchise in movie theaters. “Once you’ve seen The Force Awakens in movie theaters, you may find that certain names and places in Aftermath have a relevance you never knew,” Lucas Books senior editor Jen Heddle teased.
In the novel, written by Chuck Wendig, attention will be given to the vacuum left behind following the destruction of the second Death Star and the death of the emperor. “Does everyone accept the fall of Imperial rule? Has everyone even heard the life-altering news?” Heddle asked, describing the novel as “our first canon glimpse into the state of the galaxy after the Battle of Endor.”
(This is the second teaser for the Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens line, and the second reference to the immediate aftermath of the climactic battle of Return of the Jedi, interestingly enough.)
Star Wars: Aftermath will be released in September, the same month listed on Friday’s teaser image for Marvel’s first Journey to the Force Awakens project, Shattered Empire. Abrams’ big-screen revival, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, hits theaters Dec. 18.
