Michelle Williams will make her Broadway debut playing Sally Bowles in a revival of Sam Mendes‘ and Rob Marshall‘s 1998 production of Cabaret, the Roundabout Theatre Company announced Wednesday. Reprising the role of the show’s decadent Emcee, for which he won a Tony, is Alan Cumming.

“I’m delighted to be stepping back into the Kit Kat Klub one more time, and to be having the opportunity to re-explore and re-discover this extraordinary musical alongside two equally extraordinary performers,” says Mendes in a statement.
Mendes dramatically rebooted the 1966 musical — set in a Berlin nightclub at the dawn of the Nazi Party’s rise to power — at London’s Donmar Warehouse in 1993, with Cumming and Jane Horrocks starring. He later transferred the production to Broadway with Cumming in tow and Natasha Richardson playing Sally; Marshall was brought on as co-director and choreographer. That production won four Tonys and ran for 2,377 performances, closing in January 2004.
“I was in a totally different place in my life on both of those occasions,” Cumming says in a statement about his two stints playing the Master of Ceremonies. “And I am certainly a different man today. But one thing hasn’t changed: There are still people in this world who want to oppress and destroy us for being different, and Cabaret is both a celebration of diversity and a reminder of the dangers of complacency.”

The new production is slated for a 24-week limited engagement at the Kit Kat Klub at Studio 54 on Broadway at West 54th St. Previews begin March 24, 2014, with the official opening set for April 24.
