Cable networks dedicated coverage to multiple tornado touchdowns in Oklahoma Friday evening.
CNN reported there were three confirmed tornadoes near Oklahoma City and that some sections of I-35 and I-40 were grid locked.
The network’s Piers Morgan interviewed by phone an Oklahoma state trooper, who advised people stuck on the highway to “abandon your vehicles” if the storm was approaching.
During MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show, the ntwork aired a feed from local affiliate KFOR, which reported a mother and her baby were killed during an accident as their car flipped on I-40 by the storm. Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett spoke by phone and advised residents to seek shelter, while local anchors spoke of flash flooding in the area.
Fox News Channel’s Shepard Smith reported from the studio that the most severe damage took place west of Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin told Smith the situation has been “chaotic” with two fatalities and several people taken to the hospital. But she noted no communities have called authorities to say they have been hit hard.
Smith also read from tornado warning for the St. Louis, Mo. area which described a tornado there as “large and extremely dangerous.”
“When authorities use these exaggerated words, they do it for a reason, because there is exaggerated danger,” Smith said.
The storms come after Oklahoma was hit last week by a two-mile wide tornado, which left 24 people dead.
