SACRAMENTO-
The National Weather Service is predicting January 2015 will be the driest January in Northern California since records began in 1850.
San Francisco has seen exactly 0 inches of rain the entire month. Sacramento has only seen 0.01 inches. Normally, Sacramento sees about 3.97 inches of precipitation every January.
Many spent the last day of the month outdoors, enjoying the warm weather.
“The weather was really nice. I thought it was going to be a lot colder, but it wasn’t,” said Ariana Rios. Her family and friends participated in the Fun Run, wearing t-shirts and tutus. The 5K course includes trails, obstacles, mud, paint, and bubbles at the finish line.
“The bubbles are cold. But the weather is not,” 6 year old Madeline Jones said.
Meanwhile, in Land Park, many participated in a cycling race.
As a cyclist, this is better for me,” Tyler Pearce said. “I just went on a hike on the Lewis Creek Trail near Yosemite like 2 days ago with my family. and we were like in shorts and T-shirt. so it was just fantastic. And that’s in January?”
Sacramento United Soccer Club also hosted their kids tryouts at Granite Regional Park on their recently replaced synthetic field turf.
“That’s why we’re on the all weather surface,” Club Technical Director, Shawn Blakeman said. “Because we had planned on maybe some inclement weather, but that’s certainly not the case. And as much as we need the rain, we are enjoying the beautiful weather.”
The club worked with Sacramento City Parks and Recreation to get the state-of-the-art drought-friendly field. But they are also working to drought-proof their natural grass fields.
“Were going to a well so that will help with taking less water out, but we’re very fortunate here at Granite Regional Park that the water table is actually rising, so there’s plenty of water here if need be,” Blakeman said. “But this one certainly saves on having to water or replace any irrigation.”
