The Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art is offering up to seven senior fellowships: one Paul Mellon Fellowship as well as four to six Ailsa Mellon Bruce and Samuel H. Kress Senior Fellowships.

The Paul Mellon and Ailsa Mellon Bruce Senior Fellowships are intended to support research in the history, theory, and criticism of the visual arts of any geographical area and of any period. The Samuel H. Kress Senior Fellowships are intended primarily to support research on European art before the early 19th century.

Senior fellowships are intended for those who have held the PhD for five years or more or who possess an equivalent record of professional accomplishment at the time of application. Fellowships are for full-time research, and provide an award limited to one-half of the applicant’s salary, up to a maximum of $50,000, as well as housing in apartments near the gallery (for fellows who don’t already live in the area), and allowances for photography and for travel to a professional meeting.
