MOSCOW – Kinotavr, Russia’s biggest national film festival running June 2-9 in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, announced this year’s lineup Monday.
The official selection will feature several films that already had their premieres at international festivals. Alexei Fedorchenko’s Nebesnye zheny lugovykh mari (Celestial Wives of the Meadow Mari), a series of short stories about the Finno-Ugric ethnic group of Mari, premiered at last year’s Rome Film Festival.
Andrei Stempkovsky’s drama Raznoschik (The Delivery Guy) was part of the official selection of the Rotterdam Film Festival last January.
Yuri Bykov’s Mayor (Major), a drama centered on a police officer who accidentally commits a crime and is faced with a moral dilemma of either concealing it or being made responsible for it, will premiere at Cannes as part of Critic’s Week.
Among other notable titles in the official selection are Otdat Kontsy (Bite the Dust), the feature debut from Taisiya Igumentseva, whose student short Doroga Na (The Road To) won the main prize at Cannes’ student film section Cinefondation last year; Bakhtiyer Khudoynazarov’s V Ozhidanii Morya (Waiting for the Sea), co-produced by Russia, Germany, France, Belgium, Kazakhstan and Ukraine; and Geograf Globus Propil (The Geographer Drank His Globe Away), directed by Alexander Veledinsky and based on the novel by Alexei Ivanov.
The out-of-competition programs will include a selection of Dutch shorts and a program focused on war films.
Weekend by veteran director Stanislav Govorukhin will be screened as the opening night film and Dmitry Konstantinov’s Proshchaniye (Farewell) closes out the fest.
