LONDON — U.K. media company Telegraph Media Group on Tuesday named veteran PBS executive Jason Seiken chief content officer, a newly created position.
Editors of the firm’s Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph newspapers will report to the outgoing PBS head of digital. Seiken worked for PBS for more than six years, but he will return to London next month.
Before his time at PBS, he worked as the London-based vp of AOL Europe and editor-in-chief of the Washington Post website. Seiken will begin his new post in October and oversee Telegraph Media’s editorial operations.
The company said it wants him to drive forward its “transition to a fully integrated digital business.”
Said Telegraph Media CEO Murdoch MacLennan: “This appointment is vital to the future of our business and in achieving our ambition to become the foremost English-language multimedia news and content provider.”
Seiken said: “The Telegraph is an iconic global media brand, renowned for its quality and its innovation. I look forward to joining next month and working to make the Telegraph a fully integrated, entrepreneurial multimedia news organization providing the best English-language journalism and content in the world.”
PBS CEO Paula Kerger in a staff memo wrote: “Jason has done a truly extraordinary job over the past six-and-a-half years in leading our system’s transition into the digital age. Under his leadership, PBS.org has become the most visited network television site in the United States, and PBSKids.org has become the dominant U.S. children’s site for video.”
She added: “We will miss his vision and passion on our leadership team, and I know so many across the system will feel his absence immensely. On a personal level, I know that this makes the most sense for Jason and his family, as they have been interested in moving back to London for some time.”
PBS will begin a search for a successor immediately.
