The book that Steve Jobs gave as his final gift to friends and family is getting the big-screen treatment.
Production recently wrapped on indie feature The Answer, which is based on the best-selling book Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda.
The true story of one man’s journey to self-realization, The Answer was written by and features music by Swami Kriyananda, author of the memoir The New Path, which chronicles his relationship with Yogananda. The film also will draw from The New Path.
Victor Banerjee (A Passage to India) stars as Yogananda.
Set in the late 1930s to early 1950s, The Answer attempts to provide the answer to timeless questions pertaining to God and the search for eternal truths. Kriyananda, who died April 21, also is the film’s narrator.
The Answer is produced by Kaveeta Oberoi Kaul of Kriya Movies, along with Yogananda Films. It is directed by Indian helmer Pavan Kaul.
The Answer reunites Kaul with cinematographer Hiroo Keswani for their third film together.
Shooting took place in various locations including Calcutta, Los Angeles, Nevada City and Bucharest. Alexis Varouxakis of Adrenaline Entertainment served as the line producer for the U.S. locations, and Castel Films did the line producing in Romania.
“I think the reason for this movie being important is not because it’s about a person,” Kriyananda said before his death. “My life is not important, but what is essential to consider are the things I have been through in seeking what everybody seeks. People think they are looking for money, for love, success, fame, and so on, but beyond that everyone is looking for happiness, since ultimately we all come from bliss.”
The producers are eyeing a mid-2014 release.
