While the Marvel Studios movies have…well, other movies with which to set up their future stories, Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man franchise has the Internet — in particular, the in-universe Daily Bugle Tumblr, which may just have revealed some important backstory for Electro, the villain of next year’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
According to the latest story written by (the fictional) Joy Mercado — presumably Ned Leeds and Ben Ulrich were out covering more important stories elsewhere — Oscorp Industries might be behind the origin of Spider-Man’s next on-screen nemesis, thanks to an “experimental hydroelectric power plant” that might be less safe than the company is letting on.
STORY: Marc Webb, Hans Zimmer Form Supergroup for ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’
The report explains that the new power plant was designed to “reshape New York’s power landscape” via something called “free-flow” power grid design, but adds that the announcement of construction has launched what the Bugle describes, in a manner that’s just a little too on-the-nose, as “fears of an impending city-destroying catastrophe.”
First, that sounds like exactly the kind of thing that an Amazing Spider-Man should be dealing with in his second movie — as well as something that an electricity-themed supervillain with a name like “Electro” should be involved with in some way or another. Second, what kind of newspaper is the Daily Bugle, anyway, that it gets away with lines like “fears of an impending city-destroying catastrophe are running high”?
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be released May 2, 2014.
