The Leftovers has found its lead in Justin Theroux.
The actor/writer has signed on to play the chief of police in the Damon Lindelof drama project, which is set up at HBO. Leftovers, which is based on the Tom Perrotta book of the same name, takes place as the Rapture happens — but not quite like it’s supposed to. It is billed as the story of the people who didn’t make the cut, and a world that will never be the same.

Theroux, whose public profile has been raised because of his engagement to tabloid staple (and film star) Jennifer Aniston, will play Kevin Garvey, the police chief and father of two who’s trying to maintain some semblance of normalcy in a world that is starting to completely reject the notion.
If ultimately ordered to series, Leftovers would mark Theroux’s first regular series role since the 2000 CBS drama, The District. More recently, he has popped up in such shows as Six Feet Under and Parks and Recreation. On the big screen, he is better known for his work behind the camera, having penned films Iron Man 2, Tropic Thunder and Rock of Ages.

Lindelof will co-write and executive produce the Warner Bros. TV effort with Perrotta. Joining the pair as executive producers are Ron Yerxa, Albert Berger, Peter Berg and Sarah Aubrey. Berg will also direct The Leftovers pilot.
Theroux is repped by CAA, 3 Arts and Felker Toczek.
