BUENOS AIRES – Twenty-two films from eight Latin American countries have been nominated for the 4th annual edition of the Cinema Tropical Awards, which spread in six different categories: Best Feature Film; Best Documentary Film; Best Director, Feature Film; Best Director, Documentary Film; and Best First Film. For the first time this year, Cinema Tropical will also present an award to the Best U.S. Latino Film.
The five films competing for the award for Best Feature Film of the year are: Sebastián Lelio’s Berlinale entry Gloria (Chile), Pablo Larraín’s No (a 2012 Foreign Language Oscar nom for Chile), Carlos Reygadas’ Post Tenebras Lux (Mexico), Ana Guevara and Leticia Jorge’s So Much Water (Uruguay), and Matías Piñeiro’s Viola (Argentina).
The slate for the new category of Best U.S. Latino Film is formed by American Promise by Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson, Filly Brown by Youssef Delara and Michael D. Olmos, Mosquita y Mari by Aurora Guerrero, Reportero by Bernardo Ruiz, and Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines by Kristy Guevara-Flanagan.
STORY: 4 Hot Filming Locations in Latin America
The winners of the fourth annual Cinema Tropical Awards will be announced at a special ceremony at The New York Times Company headquarters in New York City in late January.
The nominees were culled from a list created by a nominating committee composed of 17 film professionals from Latin America, the U.S., Canada, and Europe. The final winners for each category will be chosen by a jury panel composed by Chris Allen, founder and director of UnionDocs; film critic Melissa Anderson; Beth Janson, executive director of the Tribeca Film Institute; Daniel Loría, overseas editor of BoxOffice; Mike Maggiore, programmer at Film Forum; filmmaker Paco de Onís; Anita Reher, executive director of the Flaherty Film Seminar; filmmaker Julia Solomonoff; and film curator Maria-Christina Villaseñor.
Founded by Carlos A. Gutiérrez and Monika Wagenberg in 2001, Cinema Tropical is charged with the mission of distributing, programming and promoting what was to become the biggest boom of Latin American cinema in decades. The Cinema Tropical Awards are presented in partnership with VOCES, Latino Heritage Network of The New York Times Company.
