Adam Sandler is in negotiations to star in The Cobbler, an indie drama that Tom McCarthy is putting together with plans to direct.
McCarthy is the acclaimed director behind the indie dramas The Station Agent and The Visitor. He was set to helm Spotlight, a drama about Boston Globe reporters uncovering abuse in the Catholic Church, but that project has been pushed back to later next year as it searches for its leads as well as a new home (it was set up at DreamWorks but is now a free agent).

So McCarthy decided to fit in another movie before that. Mary Jane Skalski, who has produced all three of McCarthy’s films, including his last one, Win Win, is producing Cobbler, which will be budgeted in the $10 million range.
Not much is known about Cobbler, although sources say it centers on a shoe repairman who has the ability to metaphysically step into the lives of the people whose shoes he restores.
The plan is for Sandler to fit this movie in before moving to Jason Reitman‘s latest project, Men, Women & Children. This one-two punch marks an unusual move for the actor, as it represents working with notable filmmakers who are known very much as actors’ directors. Sandler’s last few films have been broad comedies such as Grown Ups 2 and That’s My Boy.
Sander is repped by WME and Brillstein Entertainment Partners. McCarthy is repped by Gersh.
