U.K. producers Tracey Scoffield and Frank Doelger are partnering with Germany’s Beta to produce a big screen version of Derek B. Miller’s international novel Norwegian By Night.
The novel follows 82-year-old widower and ex-Marine Sheldon Horowitz who, having grudgingly moving to Oslo with his granddaughter and her Norwegian husband, witnesses the murder of a woman in his apartment complex. He rescues her six-year-old son and goes on the run, fearing that the Balkan gang responsible for the murder will return.
Chased by the murderers and the Norwegian police, he has to rely on training from over half a century before to try and keep the boy safe. This unlikely duo who can’t speak the same language start to form a bond that may just save them both.

The writer novelist has been described as “Nordic crime fiction’s new star” by The Times of London.
The deal was struck with Miller’s literary agency Janklow & Nesbit and is currently in development with a director “soon to be attached.”
Scoffield and Doelger’s Rainmark Films will be lead production company and is in Cannes with its Stephen Frears film Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight, which screens as an official selection special screening May 22.
Scoffield cites Miller as a writer who offers “the same level of international appeal as Nordic writers such as Stieg Larsson, Soren Sviestrup and Henning Mankell.”
Said Scoffied, a former BBC Films high flier: “This is a brilliant story: an action packed thriller with brains behind it – the sort of book a world class director would love to get their hands on.”
A TV and film production house, Rainmark productions include Into The Storm for HBO/ BBC and Richard Eyre’s feature The Other Man. Doelger is also a producer on HBO’s Games of Thrones.
