Sundance Selects has acquired U.S. rights to Abdellatif Kechiche’s Blue Is the Warmest Color from Wild Bunch.
Starring Lea Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos, the film made its world premiere this week In Competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
Written by Kechiche and Ghalia Lacroix, Blue Is the Warmest Color centers on a 15-year-old girl named Adèle who dreams of finding the love of her life. When she meets Thomas — a dark, handsome, friendly stranger who falls for her instantly — her dream seems to have come true. But an unsettling erotic reverie upsets the romance before it begins. Adèle imagines that the mysterious, blue-haired girl she encountered in the street slips into her bed and possesses her with an overwhelming voluptuous pleasure. She can no longer deny her true desire that she likes girls. Then the gorgeous, sensual blue-haired girl reappears and approaches her, kicking off passionate and chaotic love story.
The film was produced by Alcatraz Films, Quat’Sous Films and Wild Bunch.
“Abdellatif Kechiche has made a stunning and provocative drama with two breakout performances,” Sundance Selects/IFC Films president Jonathan Sehring said. “We are excited for the opportunity to work with him and our friends at Wild Bunch again.”
Sundance Selects’ sister label IFC Films previously released Kechiche’s The Secret of the Grain, which won four Cesar Awards, including best film and best director as well as the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival.
Tunisian-born Kechiche is an actor, writer and director. His films include Poetical Refugee and Games of Love and Chance.
The deal marks the second of the festival between Sundance Selects and Wild Bunch. The U.S. distributor struck a pact with Wild Bunch to acquire U.S. rights to Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne’s Two Days, One Night, starring Marion Cotillard.
Arianna Bocco negotiated the deal for Sundance Selects/IFC Films. Carole Baraton at Wild Bunch repped the filmmakers.
