Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer announced Monday that Katie Couric is joining Yahoo as global anchor. She’ll join the Internet company in early 2014, wrote Mayer on the Yahoo Tumblr blog, and will “lead a growing team of correspondents at Yahoo News who will cover the world’s most interesting stories and newsmakers.”
The deal follows Couric’s early exit from ABC News, reported by The Hollywood Reporter on Nov 22. She will continue to host her Disney-ABC daytime show through the remainder of the current season. And while Disney-ABC executives insist that no decision about the fate of the show has been made, it us unlikely to continue to a third season.

Couric previously hosted an online interview program, @katiecouric, while she was anchoring the CBS Evening News. But the Yahoo deal means that the former Today host will not have a regular TV news role for the first time in her career.
Mayer, who took over as CEO of Yahoo in July 2012, has been steadily growing the company’s news ranks with high-profile hires including former New York Times tech reviewer David Pogue, political writer Matt Bai and author and historian Andrei Cherny.
Characterizing Couric as “dynamic and savvy,” Mayer wrote that Couric will be the “face of Yahoo News.”
“I’ve always respected Katie for her thoughtful, charismatic approach to journalism. From pivotal coverage of natural disasters and historic elections to the Royal Wedding and the Olympic Games, groundbreaking interviews with heads of state and leading tastemakers, her experience is unmatched.”
Added Couric in a statement: “It’s very exciting to be a part of a leading company at the intersection of content and technology. I have great admiration for Marissa Mayer and her team and their commitment to bringing news, entertainment and information to the Yahoo community across multiple platforms. Joining Yahoo offers a tremendous opportunity to reach people all around the world in the way that they’re using and consuming media today.”
