LONDON – Peter O’Toole, who announced his retirement from acting in 2012, has joined the cast of Katherine of Alexandria, directed by Michael Redwood from his own script.
The British indie film details the story of Katherine of Alexandria and her link to Constantine the Great.
The feast day for Katherine, the patron saint of scholars, was officially removed from the Catholic calendar in 1969 only to be reinstated in 2002 by Pope John Paul II.
O’Toole, who has won four Golden Globe awards, been nominated for eight Academy Awards and awarded an honorary Oscar, plays palace orator Gallus, alongside Romanian newcomer Nicole Keniheart, who stars as the persecuted Katherine.
The film also stars Joss Ackland (Lethal Weapon 2), Steven Berkoff (Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), Edward Fox (The Day of the Jackal, Edward VIII) and Samantha Beckinsale (TV’s London’s Burning).
Katherine of Alexandria filmed at Paphos in Cyprus and Hadrian’s Wall, Pinewood Studios and Elstree Studios in the U.K. and will be ready for release in early 2014.
