SEOUL — Members of the jury and annual award winners for the upcoming 18th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) have been announced. The South Korean cinema event will open in the southern port city Oct. 3-12.
Iranian director Rakhshan Banietemad will serve as jury head for New Currents, the festival’s signature competition for works by emerging new talent.
Other judges include Charles Tesson — the former editor of Cahiers du Cinema will also be receiving this year’s Korean Cinema Award for promoting local cinema in Europe — as well Scott Foundas, chief film critic for Variety; Japanese film/stage director, writer and composer Shinji Aoyama; and Korean filmmaker Chung Ji-young.
In the Wide Angle section for shorts, animations, documentaries, and experimental works, American producer Ryan Harrington, local director Min Hwan-ki and Indonesian producer John Badalu will preside over the BIFF Mecenat Award. The award is given to two documentaries, including one from Korea and another from the Asian region.
French producer Pascale Faure, Philippine director Adolfo Alix Jr., and Korean filmmaker Jung Ji-woo will judge short films for the Sonje Award. Two Sonje Awards will be given, including one from Korea and another from Asia.
Meanwhile, this year Korean Retrospective section will be dedicated to veteran cineaste Im Kwon-taek. The tribute, titled “Fly High, Run Far: The Making of Korean Master Im Kwon-taek,” will be the largest retrospective to date on the prolific filmmaker. Some 70 of his 101 films will be shown, including his Cannes Best Director-winning Chihwaseon (2001). Unprecedentedly, the showcase will begin 10 days prior to the opening of the festival and run for 20 days from Sept. 23 to Oct. 12.
