SAG-AFTRA president Ken Howard and IATSE president Matt Loeb were elected last week to the AFL-CIO’s executive committee, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. They attained those positions as part of the slate put forward by AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka at the union’s convention held in Los Angeles last week.
Not on the slate was former SAG-AFTRA co-president Roberta Reardon, who had served on the executive committee. Reardon continues as a SAG-AFTRA board member but is no longer an officer of the union and is not running for executive vice president, contrary to her previous announcement. She continues on the board of the National Labor College, which is affiliated with the AFL-CIO.

Other union leaders with an entertainment industry connection who were elected to the 55-member committee were Larry Cohen, president of the Communications Workers of America (which represents cable and telephone installers, as well as television station technicians), and Edwin D. Hill, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (which represents television station technicians). Also elected was Maria Elena Durazo, leader of the L.A. County Federation of Labor.
Entertainment unions affiliated with the AFL-CIO are SAG-AFTRA, WGA East, AFM (musicians union), IATSE and Actors’ Equity. All had delegates at the AFL-CIO’s convention. In contrast, the DGA, WGA West and Teamsters are independent, and were not represented.
