Bridesmaids director Paul Feig and breakthrough star Melissa McCarthy were back in theaters this weekend with The Heat. But don’t count on them reuniting for a sequel to the 2011 Kristen Wiig-penned comedy.
When Wiig was offered a chance to make a Bridesmaids sequel, she quickly turned it down, the actress told Harper’s Bazaar.

“It wasn’t a hard decision,” she says. “We knew during the first one, this was it. We would have made a lot of money if there was a second one, but that’s not my goal in my creative life.”
Fans had been clamoring for a sequel, and both Feig and McCarthy have said they’d be up for it but left the final decision up to Wiig.

Bridesmaids grossed nearly $300 million worldwide but despite calls for more female-fronted comedies in the wake of its success, few have been released.
Perhaps The Heat‘s box-office firepower ($40 million this past weekend) will lead to more movies starring funny women, or at least a sequel.
