The Science and Technology Council of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is getting ready to begin a beta test of the first app developed by the council that will be available to the public.
The development is being led by the council’s Solid State Lighting Project Committee, which has been researching inconsistencies in how solid state lighting systems respond to different digital cinematography cameras.
To help address this situation, the Academy Color Predictor app is being designed to help filmmakers understand the interaction of key elements in cinematography — including the lights, camera, filters and the photographed objects — by allowing users to change any of the selected parameters to visualize rendering differences and compare looks. The app will initially be available for the iPad.
Council member and visual effects technologist Jonathan Erland chairs the project committee.
SciTech Council director Andy Maltz was having early talks with filmmakers about the developing app this week at the International Broadcasting Convention.
