TORONTO – With workers threatening to strike weeks before the Toronto International Film Festival kicks off, IATSE has reached a tentative deal to avert a walkout at Roy Thomson Hall, the top venue for star-driven premieres.
IATSE Local 58 on Wednesday said it reached an agreement with management at Roy Thomson Hall, three weeks before Benedict Cumberbatch and director Bill Condon walk down the red carpet on King Street to launch TIFF with a world premiere of The Fifth Estate.

The U.S.-based film and TV technicians union had been in negotiations with Roy Thomson Hall management since May 16 and secured strike authorization on Aug. 8 to get more leverage at the bargaining table.
Local 58 eventually inked a new agreement with Roy Thomson Hall and nearby Massey Hall, which includes a 2 percent wage increase in each of the two years of the agreement.
Other gala films to screen at Roy Thomson Hall next month include the Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman starrer The Railway Man, Ron Howard‘s Rush and the Jennifer Aniston starrer Life of Crime.
The Toronto International Film Festival is set to run from Sept. 5 to 15.
