CERES-
A Ceres Police officer is facing a misdemeanor charge of assault while in uniform, the department said Tuesday.
The accusation against Officer Christopher Melton, a nine-year veteran of the Ceres Police Department, stems out of an April 13 arrest. Melton was put on paid administrative leave as his supervisors suspected him of misconduct.
Police say an internal affairs investigation is ongoing. The Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office is doing its own criminal investigation
“Officer Melton’s conduct, as alleged, does not reflect the values of Ceres Police Department or the law enforcement community as a whole,” Ceres Police Chief Art de Werk said in a written statement.
