Following its stellar weekend bow of $41 million, the Insidious horror property will be back with a third incarnation.
Entertainment One, FilmDistrict and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions are teaming to develop Insidious 3, with Leigh Whannell (Insidious, Insidious: Chapter 2) writing. James Wan directed the first two films in the franchise, but it is unlikely he will return for the third.
Insidious: Chapter 2 became one of the highest-grossing horror openings ever and one of the biggest openings for a film released in the month of September.
Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions, which produced the previous two films, is producing the next installment along with Oren Peli. Steven Schneider, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Peter Schlessel, Lia Buman and Xavier Marchand are executive producing.
“FilmDistrict, eOne and SPWA have been incredible partners on the Insidious franchise,” Blum said. “We are all so grateful for how audiences embraced James Wan and Leigh’s latest film and are excited to see what Leigh has in store for the third chapter.”
Q&A: James Wan, Leigh Whannell on Trust, Terror and ‘Insidious: Chapter 2’
The first Insidious revolved around Josh and Renai Lambert (Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne) and their young son, Dalton, who is possessed by demons. The project was picked up by SPWA at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival and distributed by FilmDistrict in the U.S.
EOne handles rights to the film in Canada, the U.K. and Spain, and Sony handles rights in the rest of the world. It was released on April 1, 2011, earning $97 million worldwide. With a $1.5 million budget, it was hailed as one the most profitable film of 2011.
Insidious: Chapter 2 continues to focus on the haunted Lambert family as they seek to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world. Lin Shaye, Ty Simpkins and Barbara Hershey also starred.
Whannell is repped by Paradigm.
