Dornan was in negotiations to play Christian Grey, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Wednesday night. The Once Upon a Time and The Fall star nabbed the role after Charlie Hunnam dropped out of the film, with THR reporting that he was uncomfortable with the frenzy surrounding the project.
STORY: Hollywood Tweets About Jamie Dornan Being in Talks for ‘Fifty Shades’
Dornan tested opposite female lead Dakota Johnson for James, director Sam Taylor-Johnson and producers Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti last week. James tweeted about having dinner with Brunetti earlier this week.
If Dornan’s deal closes, he will be signed on for three, possibly four, Fifty Shades movies, assuming the first film is successful.
The Focus Features and Universal release is set to hit theaters Aug. 1, 2014.
