The promotional campaign behind Lars von Trier‘s hotly anticipated Nymphomaniac has shifted from titillation to literary quotation in its latest sneak peek video, posted on the Nymphomaniac website (below).
The clip shows a single long shot, in black and white, of Charlotte Gainsbourg, the nymphomaniac of the film’s title, walking toward a desolate hospital. Over the shot, Stellan Skarsgard can be heard reading the opening lines of Edgar Allen Poe’s famous short story The Fall of the House of Usher.

Nothing is explained in the clip, nor is it clear how it fits into the rest of the movie. But the Poe quote appears to signal von Trier’s literary ambitions for Nymphomaniac. Aside from dividing the film into book-like chapters, a technique von Trier used on previous features, including Melancholia and Dogville, the controversial Danish director has gone so far as to claim that Nymphomaniac represents a new film genre he has given the literary-sounding name of Digressionism.
Nymphomaniac will have its world premiere in Denmark in December and is expected to screen in Cannes next year.
