TUOLUMNE COUNTY—
After the Rim Fire burning in Tuolumne County more than tripled in size overnight, Governor Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency for the area.
He noted that, among things, the proclamation came down due to the size and scope of the fire – being that forces from across the state will be needed to help fight the continuously growing inferno.
The fire jumped from 16,000 to nearly 54,000 acres from Wednesday night to Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Forest Service. By Thursday evening, that acreage had jumped to 63,366 — with containment falling to just 1%.
Two homes have been burned, while 2,500 other residences remain threatened.
