Johnny Depp is finally opening up about his split from longtime partner Vanessa Paradis, a year after their breakup.
“The last couple years have been a bit bumpy,” he says in a Rolling Stone cover story. “At times, certainly unpleasant, but that’s the nature of breakups, I guess, especially when there are kiddies involved.”
Depp and Paradis, who announced their breakup in June 2012, have two kids together: daughter Lily-Rose, 14, and Jack, 11.

“Relationships are very difficult,” adds Depp, who next appears on the big screen in The Lone Ranger. “Especially in the racket that I’m in because you’re constantly away or they’re away and so it’s hard. It wasn’t easy on her. It wasn’t easy on me. It wasn’t easy on the kids. So, yeah. The trajectory of that relationship — you play it out until it goes, one thing leads to another.”
Still he says he still cares for her, and adds that their kids have been “incredibly understanding, incredibly strong.”
Here are seven other revelations about Depp from the Rolling Stone profile.
1. He watches Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.
While he’s on location for a film shoot, late at night, he keeps himself entertained by playing the guitar, reading a book or watching the “trashiest television imaginable.” Yep, that includes TLC’s redneck reality hit.
2. He doesn’t want to act forever.
Depp, who turned 50 on June 9, thinks of retiring “every day,” but says nothing is planned on the immediate horizon. “I can’t say that I’d want to be doing this for another 10 years,” he says, adding that he wants to be able to do things while he has the “opportunity and the desire and the creative spark” to do so.
3. He is “basically blind as a bat” in one eye.
He was born with poor vision in his left eye, and the condition is irreparable; he is nearsighted (and lately has become farsighted) in his right eye. When he’s acting without his glasses, he can see only inches in front of his face.

4. He is “socially inept.”
Depp says he doesn’t like socializing at parties or other events. “It’s just not comfortable,” he says.
5. He doesn’t watch his own movies.
The last one he watched was 2004’s The Libertine, which he does recommend. “I prefer to walk away with the experience,” he says. “My job, as an actor, is to give the director options. You can only hope that the takes that you thought were the best were chosen. But, then again, if I don’t watch it, I’ll never know. So, better off.”
6. He wanted his portrayal of Tonto to be “no joke.”
Depp portrays the Lone Ranger sidekick in Gore Verbinski’s upcoming Lone Ranger, which opens July 3. “First of all, I wouldn’t f— with someone with a dead bird on their head,” he says. “Second of all, he’s got the f—ing paint on his face, which scares me.”
7. He doesn’t wear underwear.
“That’s the general approach,” he says.
