For the first time in its history, Universal Pictures has crossed $2 billion in tickets sales at the international box office.
The milestone was reached thanks to a string of hits, led by Fast & Furious 6 ($549.3 million) and Illumination Entertainment’s animated tentpole Despicable Me 2 ($485.4 million). The two films rank No. 2 and No. 3 on the 2013 foreign box office chart after Disney and Marvel’s Iron Man 3 ($805.7 million).
News of crossing the $2 billion mark is a coup for Universal Pictures International president David Kosse, and comes as NBCUniversal International president Jeff Shell takes over the film studio (Kosse works in London, where Shell was based), replacing ousted chairman Adam Fogelson.
The studio’s stellar box office run has also been fueled by Mama ($76.1 million), Oblivion ($197.2 million) and Les Miserables. The musical, released at the end of last year, grossed $293 million overseas.
Universal’s upcoming 2013 release slate includes the continued rollout of Richard Curtis‘ romantic comedy About Time and Keanu Reeves‘ 47 Ronin. The studio is also releasing 11 movies in select territories, including Martin Scorsese‘s The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
