The new year started with a strong opening for the first coming attraction for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
The sequel to 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes recorded 14.8 million views in its opening week, according to technology firm Zefr, which tracks trailer views on YouTube. The movie, which stars Gary Oldman, Keri Russell and Andy Serkis as Caesar, the leader of the apes and chimps, opens July 11.
The second, third and fourth spots were also held by new trailers, including a particularly strong opening for How to Train Your Dragon 2. The June release nabbed 10.9 million views.
Holding third was the upcoming Kate Upton/Cameron Diaz/Leslie Mann comedy The Other Woman with 4.4 million YouTube views for its first preview. The Nick Cassavetes-directed film opens in late April.
Johnny Depp‘s sci-fi thriller Transcendence recorded 4.3 million views to finish fourth for the week and just edge out the Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s international trailer, which had 4.2 million views.
About 100,000 views behind was 22 Jump Street‘s first trailer, which notched 4.1 million views for the sixth spot.
The last four spots in the top ten were held by holdovers: Edge of Tomorrow, Godzilla, The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s U.S. trailer and in tenth The Legend of Hercules, which opens in theaters Jan. 10.
