ABC is taking a page from its own playbook.
Combining the strengths of musical drama Nashville and fairy-tale effort Once Upon a Time, the network has ordered to pilot a fairy-tale musical comedy from The Neighbors‘ Dan Fogelman. The half-hour, Galavant, is centered on handsome Prince Galavant and his quest for revenge against the king who stole his one true love.
The single-camera effort is set up at ABC Studios, with Fogelman on board to write and executive produce. Alan Menken is attached as an EP to write music, with Glenn Slater expected to EP and pen the lyrics. The trio recently teamed up to produce a musical episode of The Neighbors, for which the sophomore comedy garnered its first Emmy nomination.
The news comes as the Disney-owned network plans to add another familiar fairy-tale drama to its lineup this season with Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. Adding music to the formula, while historically challenging, can provide a lucrative ancillary revenue stream in success, as rival studios have found with both Nashville and Glee.
Galavant marks the first project from Fogelman’s new deal with ABC Studios. He has brought on former Industry Entertainment manager Jess Rosenthal to run the new company, titled Rhode Island Ave. Productions.
Fogelman, whose credits include Cars, Tangled and Crazy, Stupid, Love, is repped by WME, Management 360 and Felker Toczek.
