Marvel Enterprises is apparently feeling very confident about its new Infinite Comics series. When Deadpool: The Gauntlet launches next month, not only will the first issue of the digital-first series be available online, but it will also be released in print — for free — at the same time.
The 13-part series, written by regular Deadpool writers Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn with art by Reilly Brown, follows Wolverine: Japan’s Most Wanted and Iron Man: Final Frontier as the third original series in the digital format in January, with each new issue being released weekly.

Traditionally, each digital issue has sold for $2.99 through Marvel’s digital app, web store and ComiXology. Marvel announced yesterday that the first issue will receive a print edition available through “participating retailers” for free on January 15. Copies of the print edition will be on sale while supplies last, according to the publisher, suggesting that this will be the only print edition of the material until the unannounced-yet-inevitable* collected edition later in 2014.
(*To date, Marvel’s digital-first material has ended up in print at some point. A hardcover print edition of Wolverine: Japan’s Most Wanted, the first Infinite Comics series, was solicited for mid-2014 release last month, suggesting a late 2014 release for a collection of the Deadpool series.)
