With the discrimination lawsuit against Paula Deen ignited by the admission that the celebrity chef had used a racial slur, The Daily Show‘s newly crowned fill-in host capitalized on the news.
“The N-word?” asked John Oliver on Thursday night. “Which one did she use because I know it wasn’t non-fat.”
In the deposition in a discrimination lawsuit filed against Deen, the chef had admitted that she had previously used the N-word but said she does not condone its use. On Friday, Deen canceled a scheduled interview with Today show host Matt Lauer.
Q&A: John Oliver Will Try Not to Destroy ‘The Daily Show’
After several one-liners where the Comedy Central host is pleased with how his quips landed, Oliver settled down The Daily Show segment. “I think I may almost be full of Paula Deen jokes, I mean, let me just settle my stomach here,” he said, while adding generous amounts of upset stomach medication to a water glass.
Oliver devoted nearly the entire opening segment to the Food Network chef, bringing in correspondent Jessica Williams to decipher Deen’s medical condition of “type-1 or type-2 racism.”
Deen released a video statement on Friday in which she apologized for her use of the N-word. “I want to apologize for everybody for the wrong that I’ve done,” she said. “I want to learn and grow from this. … Inappropriate hurtful language is totally, totally unacceptable.”
