CALIFORNIA —

They show up to give you a home estimate, but these aren’t the type of people you’d usually want in your home.

A total of 75 wannabe contractors set out to do home repairs. They walk in to a home, but leave in handcuffs. FOX40 obtained undercover surveillance video from the six sting operations that took place over the course of two days.

The California State License Board uses bate houses across the state. When the unlicensed contractors show up, they bid on a project. If there estimate exceeds $500 and they aren’t licensed, that’s a crime.

During the round-up sex offenders Ronald Keith Woodruff and David Jose Torres were arrested.

Many are repeat violators; felons with a criminal history for crimes like drug charges, robbery, rape, and even child abuse.

“Almost every time we do this we have sex offenders and those with active warrants,” said Melanie Bedwell of the Contractors State License Board.

The state agency conducts stings three times a year. This time around eight men were cuffed in South Lake Tahoe and 13 from Roseville.

It’s an eye opener for homeowners needing repairs.

The state says to always check and make sure you know who you’re inviting into your home. To see if a contractor is licensed visit the state’s website: https://www2.cslb.ca.gov/OnlineServices/CheckLicenseII/CheckLicense.aspx
