SEOUL – Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Naomi Kawase and Kim Jee-woon, among other top Asian filmmakers, will headline the 2013 Asian Project Market (APM), the indie film financing event that runs in conjunction with the Busan International Film Festival in October.
Makhamalbaf will present The President at APM, in addition to showing his film Ongoing Smile about Busan Festival founder Kim Dong-ho at the festival, which opens Oct. 3-12 in the South Korean port city. APM runs Oct. 7-10.

The President is among 11 films — out of APM’s total of 30 works — that are designed to be international joint ventures before they add new finance, sales, and/or distribution partners. Others include anticipated Korea-Japan collaboration Thousand Weeds by Ounie Lecomte (A Brand New Life) and Qatar-U.S.-Netherlands production Marjoun and the Flying Headscarf by Susan Youssef.
This year’s selection also includes a rare English remake of the Korean film End of Animal, which is being directed by Eron Sheean and has already received partial funding from Screen Australia.
Big names taking part in the event include Wayne Wang and Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, whose comedy, Television, closed last year’s Busan Festival.
Others include Indonesia’s emerging indie director Edwin and Korean-Chinese filmmaker Zhang Lu, (who were both recently invited to make shorts for Korea’s Jeonju Film Festival), as well as Korea’s Sundance winner O Muel (Jiseul) and Yeon Sangho, the noted creator of the dark adult animation The King of Pigs.
