When it comes to the flourishing love affair of American Idol alums Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo, The Hollywood Reporter Idol Worship contributor Fred Bronson has already played the role of witness. Seated in the audience at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre for the season 11 finale, he was there when the season five finalist got down on one knee and proposed marriage to the season three runner-up. And he’ll be there on the big day — to officiate the June 1 ceremony.
“I was just hoping to have a good seat at their wedding,” says Bronson, who also writes for THR sister publication Billboard. “Little did I realize …” he adds.
Although not an ordained minister, Bronson was “thrilled” to be bestowed with the honor. He then went through a very “simple process,” obtaining a temporary license to marry the couple this Saturday in L.A.

Given the history the longtime Idol fan has had with both alums, Bronson is a fitting choice to usher in their union. “Fred really knows us,” Young tells THR. “He knows us both as single individuals and as the couple we are today. We couldn’t pick a better person and friend for the job.”
Bronson first met DeGarmo during her season three run on Idol and bonded with the teen after doing a three-day Billboard interview that the journalist believes “was the longest interview Diana had ever done — maybe still to this day. Her mom was there too, and the next thing I knew we were staying in touch and that summer I traveled to Philadelphia to interview the Idols backstage on their summer tour for The Billboard Radio Countdown.” Bronson even traveled to Hawaii for the end of the tour at DeGarmos’ invitation.

Two seasons later, Bronson met Young and was charmed by the Denver native’s genuineness. Says Bronson: “I got to know Ace better after he completed his Idol run. He and his brother Ryan are the best in so many ways. They’re smart, funny, honest and endearing. We’ve had a lot of fun together, including a memorable New Year’s Eve a few months ago, when we were all in New York together. I was working on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest and was able to invite them all to ring in 2013 in our green room above Times Square.”
As a couple, Bronson said both singers were made for each other. “I love how in love they are and how much they truly care for and take care of each other,” he says. “When I’m with them, I can’t help but see the love in their eyes, and I love how they treat each other. I also love that this is truly a 24/7 relationship, because they also work together and that’s the way they want it — they simply want to be together all the time.”
