The original Rascals lineup will play on the West Coast for the first time in 45 years when their rock concert/Broadway show hybrid Once Upon a Dream hits the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on Oct. 10.
Written and co-directed (with Marc Brickman) by the E Street Band’s Steven Van Zandt, Once Upon a Dream has been touring the country since selling out all 15 shows at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway this spring.
Original bandmembers Felix Cavaliere (keyboard & vocals), Eddie Brigati (vocals), Dino Danelli (drums) and Gene Cornish (guitar), together for the first time since 1970, present such classic Rascals hits as “Good Lovin,’” “Lonely Too Long,” “It’s a Beautiful Morning,” “How Can I Be Sure” and “Groovin.’”
The BASE Entertainment production also features the history of the iconic group told through archival footage, narration and film segments. Tickets go on sale Aug. 3 at 10 a.m.
The last time the four originals Rascals played out West was in August 1968 at the Hollywood Bowl as part of a multi-act lineup that included Tommy James and the Shondells and Eric Burdon, among others. (The band came to the L.A. area in August 1988 without Brigati.)
Formerly known as The Young Rascals, the band, with its brand of classic blue-eyed soul, is considered one of the most influential American groups of all time.
Another one of their hits, the plea for tolerance “People Got to Be Free,” topped the charts for five weeks in summer 1968 and forever linked The Rascals to the political and social turmoil of the 1960s. “Good Lovin’” and “Groovin’” also made it to No. 1.
The Rascals were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, with Van Zandt doing the honors.
