In Sony’s upcoming action-comedy Pixels, video games are attacking Earth, and it’s up to a group of ’80s arcade champs to save the day.
In the movie, which hits theaters on July 24, Adam Sandler, Josh Gad and Peter Dinklage are pressed into duty when large, pixelated versions of ‘80s video games (Pac-Man, Centipede, Donkey Kong) are physically trying to destroy the planet.
As the film explains, video games were sent into space in 1982 in a time capsule. But when aliens misinterpret that as a declaration of war, they attack, using the games as models for their assaults.
The U.S. president (played by Kevin James) turns to his childhood best friend (Sandler) to lead a team of all-star gamers, including Gad and Dinklage, Sandler’s former video game nemeses. Michelle Monaghan also stars, playing a weapons developer for the military. Chris Columbus directed the film, which was scripted by Tim Herlihy and Timothy Dowling. Pixels was produced by Sandler, Columbus, Mark Radcliffe and Allen Covert.
The movie is based on a 2010 short film by Patrick Jean. Watch the trailer below.
