Once Upon a Time returns from its midseason break on Sunday, and now that the Frozen arc has ended, the Queens of Darkness will take center stage.
While the ABC drama has showcased a fair amount of villains during its run, co-creator Eddy Kitsis told reporters after a recent screening that bringing these specific women — Maleficent (Kristin Bauer van Straten), Ursula (Merrin Dungey) and Cruella de Vil (Victoria Smurfit) — together for an arc was something into which the writers put a lot of thought.
“For us, Maleficent was previously on the show, and we always wanted to get back to her, which is why we never fully killed her,” he said. “Ursula, we set up and teased a little bit in the Ariel (Joanna Garcia Swisher) episode. And then Cruella, we just liked her. There’s a sass to her. What we wanted was Gold (Robert Carlyle) to take a lesson from the heroes who always worked together, and realize he needed to work together with the villains. And so we loved the idea of the Team of Evil.”
