Terrerobytes: Jose Quintana shows up on the radar

Jose Quintana arrives on the radar, Josh Hamilton meets with MLB officials, and Vince Coleman gets everyone excited to run.

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

For the past few seasons, Jose Quintana has been the White Sox' No. 2 starter.  Unfortunately, when you've got Chris Sale as a No. 1 and a team with a losing record for multiple seasons, you don't get any respect.  Well, now that seems to be turning around for Jose Quintana. Now, when Jeff Samardzija sings his praises, it's time to get the respect he deserves.

"I think his priorities are being one of the best pitchers in the league," Samardzija said. "And when that happens, then I think the accolades will fall into line."

Samardzija then succinctly summarizes what we've been seeing from Quintana over the past three seasons.

"He attacks -- that's a great word for it," Samardzija said. "He gets a lot of quick outs. He pounds the zone with three or four great pitches. When you do that, you're going to be pretty successful."

As if by cue, Sporting News lists Quintana as one of four pitchers to watch this season.

Traditional statistics will tell you Quintana was mediocre at best in 2014. He was 9-11 with a 3.32 ERA and allowed about a hit per inning. But those numbers do not tell the full story. Quintana’s FIP was 2.81, comparable to Jon Lester’s 2.80 and good for 10th best in baseball among qualified pitchers. His strikeout rate has increased ever year he has been in the bigs – from 14.3 percent to 19.7 percent to 21.5 percent. At the same time, and his walk rate has dipped from 7.4 percent to 6.7 percent to 6.3 percent.

Josh Hamilton hasn't been to spring training yet, but he's already meeting with MLB officials about a potential "disciplinary issue".  However this turns out, the Angels still owe Hamilton, who turns 34 in May, $90.2 million over the next three seasons.

I can't summarize this better.
