As everyone who’s seen Return of the Jedi knows, the Empire ends up defeated by the Rebels, and everyone lives happily ever after, right? Well, maybe not. A new interview with one of the stars of Star Wars: Episode VII suggests that, even if we can expect the return of the original cast, spaceships like the Millennium Falcon and maybe even a Death Star in the new movie, the bad guys might still be at large. And that’s not the only surprise for longtime fans.
“I’m constantly looking for a cheesy line to say to harken back to the old ones,” Oscar Isaac told Entertainment Weekly about the script for the latest visit to a galaxy far, far away. Sadly, those of us who loved the occasionally clunky dialogue of the original movies will be left bereft. “What they’re trying to do and what’s really great is J.J.’s been loosening it up a little bit and trying to make it alive and energized,” Isaac went on. “It’s not formal. They’re messy, energized people. We’ve all intentionally tried to do that. Just make it a little more fiery and messy.”

Despite the lack of cheesy dialogue, Isaac said that everyone’s enjoying making the movie — something he credits director J.J. Abrams with. “There’s a lot of enthusiasm [on the set] and it’s being done with a lot of heart. There’s nothing cynical about the way we’re doing this,” Isaac explained. “Even in the way he’s shooting it — he’s shooting on film and actually building the sets, so you’ve got hundreds of Stormtroopers or whatever, and hundreds of extras and all the ships. You actually see it. It’s all real.”
Isaacs isn’t the only one who’s described the set as “real”; after visiting earlier this year, Kevin Smith said the same thing, talking about the crew “shooting an actual sequence in a set that is real — I walked across the set, there were explosions — and it looked like a shot right out of a f—ing Star Wars movie.”
But wait: “Hundreds of Stormtroopers?” That’s an odd thing to mention, especially considering that the Empire theoretically ceased to exist in Return of the Jedi. Does this add fuel to speculation that the Empire will return for the new movie (or, perhaps, that we’ll get a flashback to scenes aboard the Death Star)? Isaac isn’t offering any more hints.
“People want to know all those special things and when those iconic moments are going to happen, but if all that gets revealed beforehand I feel like it robs people of that moment when they’re sitting there watching it for the first time,” he said. With more than a year of impatient waiting and speculating to go before we get that moment where we’re sitting there watching it for the first time, that might seem an especially cruel thing to say. Maybe a Stormtrooper could be the next Twittered image from the set, just to up the frustration ante …
