Every year, the Super Bowl brings new trailers for movies hoping to make a massive impact with audiences, and this year is unlikely to be any different — we already know that Jurassic World will have a new trailer on show, with others still to be confirmed.
With such a crowded year ahead at the box office, there are plenty of movies that could do with the buzz that a successful Super Bowl trailer will bring. The online debut of Fox’s Fantastic Four trailer suggests that it’ll make an appearance during the game, but what other movies could benefit from a new trailer this Sunday? Here are a few suggestions.
Likely a longshot, considering that the first trailer for the movie dropped just a few weeks ago, but given the apathy that surrounded that trailer, the Super Bowl would be an ideal place to launch a revised trailer that plays up the comedy pedigree of all involved and makes the movie seem just a little more fun. Course-corrections might not be the Marvel way, but if you’re going to try and make up for a flubbed launch, doing so quickly and launching your renewed vision in front of as many people as possible might be the way to do it.
?Mission: Impossible 5
With the release date of the fifth in Tom Cruise’s spy capers moved up from December to July so as to avoid the inevitable box office juggernaut that will be Star Wars, it suddenly feels like it’s time for a peak inside the movie — or, at least, some kind of teaser that reminds audiences that it even exists, and maybe tells us the actual title of the movie while it’s there. Given that the cast for the movie includes Avenger Jeremy Renner and Star Trek’s Simon Pegg, shouldn’t this movie feel like a bigger deal months out from its release?
?The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
Pretty much everything said about Mission: Impossible’s need to let audiences know that it exists also goes for Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer’s reboot of the 1960s spy TV show, schedule for release in August. We’ve seen a still from this, but little else. Considering the competition for attention this summer, it’s a little surprising that there hasn’t been a trailer released for this already.
The first teaser for the Damon Lindelof/Brad Bird/George Clooney collaboration was released back in October, which means that we’re due for a new trailer by now, right…? After all, the movie is scheduled for release this May, and we’ve already had two trailers for the same month’s Avengers: Age of Ultron by this point. Perhaps this is the movie that Disney will push at the big game this year.
?Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
The question might be, would Warner Bros. be willing to shell out the exorbitant ad rates to buy airtime for a movie that won’t be released until 2016, just for the chance to dominate social media during the game? As someone who didn’t see the footage from last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, I find myself hoping that the answer to that is a yes.
